From Gems to Quantum: IIT Madras Propels India’s Lab-Grown Diamond Research Internationally

What is the news?

The India Centre for Lab Grown Diamond (InCent-LGD) at IIT Madras has achieved a significant milestone by showcasing the nation’s research in diamond-based technologies at a global scale. Under the leadership of Prof. M.S. Ramachandra Rao and Co-Principal Investigator Prof. Sathyan Subbiah, the centre is transitioning from traditional jewelry-grade diamonds to high-performance electronic-grade materials. These advancements are critical for the next generation of quantum technologies, sensing, and photonics.

Why is it interesting?

Supported by a grant of ₹242.96 crore from the Ministry of Commerce, InCent-LGD is focused on “Atmanirbhar Bharat” by developing indigenous CVD and HPHT systems. The recent iCDEM 2026 conference held in Chennai highlighted these breakthroughs, signaling to the global tech corridor that India is no longer just a talent hub, but a leader in the creation of strategic deep-tech materials.
